When I talk to college students who want to work in conservative politics, I tell them to drop out of their political science program.
The reason is pretty simple, most entry-level and mid-level political jobs simply don’t care about your political science degree. Even if you’re really exceptional when it comes to political theory or policy, the focus will be on your experience.
Political Science is rarely a marketable skill.
Do you know what is always a marketable skill?
Marketing
Most political jobs are actually some variation of traditional or digital marketing.
Video Production
Copywriting
Graphic Design
Data Management
Social Media
Campaign Management
Small Donor Fundraising
Media Strategist
Email Coordinator
Direct Mail Operations
Don’t get me wrong. We definitely need operations staff, high dollar fundraising, and exceptional legal teams. If you’re specialized in something else, there’s nothing wrong with that.
But, the largest year-round employers are marketing firms.
For example, HSP Direct is currently hiring a long-list of positions throughout their suite of companies:
Digital Fundraising Associate, OnPoint Data Strategy | Ashburn, VA
Director of Political Data Strategy, OnPoint Data Strategy | Ashburn, VA
Director of Data Sales and Data Acquisition, OnPoint Data Strategy | Ashburn, VA
Head of Data Processing, OnPoint Data Strategy | Ashburn, VA
Marketing Project Manager, OnPoint Data Strategy | Ashburn, VA
If you think about it, all organizations rely on effective communication to donors, legislators. media, and the people our causes work to help.
Whether you’re entering college or preparing for your next role, this is an industry worth considering- and the opportunities are plentiful.
